Being located along a typhoon belt and the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, disasters are the new normal for the Philippines.

Early Monday of October 17, 2016, as Typhoon Karen (international name: Sarika) left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), another stronger cyclone pounded Luzon in the afternoon. Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) stated that Typhoon #LawinPH (international name: Haima) entered PAR at 5:30 PM. According to reports from, typhoon survivors in Peñablanca, Cagayan (a farming town of about 42,000 people) flocked in makeshift houses as they wait for assistance.

And as we stand by our commitment of leaving no one behind, Gawad Kalinga has activated Operation Walang Iwanan for Typhoon Lawin. For the initial phase of relief operations, we intend to prepare and distribute 10,000 food packs (PHP 200 per pack).

Team GK has set up operation centers in Tuao, Cagayan and Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. Below are the latest updates from the ground:

October 25, 2016, 3:19 PM

Delivering the last batch of relief goods for the families that were affected by Typhoon #LawinPH. What really struck me is the statement of Nanay Elsie of GK Capirpirwan.

We were supposed to give them 20 packs but she said, "12 packs na lang po ang iwan ninyo sa amin at paghahatian na lang namin para naman may maibigay pa sa iba. Okay pa naman po kami, sapat na po sa amin na nabisita ninyo kami."

I think more than the food packs that we are giving, what is very important is we never forget them and we never fail to care for them.

Helping our kababayan up North!

From repacking of goods in San Fernando, La Union with our volunteers (victims of illegal drugs) of the said city to #OperationWalangIwanan (relief operations) in Ilocos Norte/Sur.

Special thanks to Ford Philippines for lending Team GK their top of the line pickup trucks. 24 hours after Typhoon #LawinPH (Haima) made landfall, our teams assessed and brought relief to difficult to reach and hard-hit areas.

Cheers to USTMAAA (USA) because of the quick action of their board of directors through Dr. Promo Andres and GK USA through their Chairman Dr. Jun Rafinan, Team GK was able to respond immediately after landfall. Maraming salamat sa inyo!

And for all who prayed, volunteered, and shared resources, may the Lord continue to bless this fellowship borne out of our genuine concern for others.

"Oo, malakas ang bagyo. Tinali namin ang bubong pero nasira pa rin. Diyan kami sa kapitbahay nakituloy ng asawa ko. Kayo po ang unang pumunta para tulungan kami. Salamat sa inyo." - Nanay Andeng (GK Manaring, Ilagan, Isabela)

Typhoon #LawinPH remains as an EXTREMELY CATASTROPHIC SUPER TYPHOON. It continues to move closer to Northern Luzon increasing its danger to the area especially Isabela and Cagayan.

As Northern Luzon and Central Luzon braze for very strong winds and rainfall, the prudent thing for us to do is to pray for the safety of our kababayans and prepare to respond to their needs.
I would like to encourage everyone to respond in a moments notice. Gawad Kalinga Disaster Response Team are doing the following:
1. We have sent lead personnels to stay in Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Ilocos region to organize relief and data gathering if needed.
2. A disaster response meeting is set on October 20 to outline a response.
3. If in case there is a need to do relief operations, we are initially targeting 10,000 family food packs at PHP 200 each.

Walang Iwanan!
