A Chance to Feed
[Date Created: November 28, 2014]

by Ernie Maipid

A crowd of around 850 filled the stretch of NPO Road intersecting EDSA at 7 in the morning  last Sunday, November 23, as the once homeless poor of Gawad Kalinga brought breakfast to feed the hungry homeless of the NIA triangle.

A small utility truck parked on the street side back dropped by a tarpaulin said it all: “Goodbye Gutom: Walang Magugutom, Kung Walang Iwanan”. Fronting the stage were around 70 tables laden with a simple fare of rice, hotdogs, scrambled egg, tuyo, kamatis and banana on banana leaves laid out in typical “GK boodle style”.

Volunteer kapitbahayan of GK Communities in Sitio Pajo, Sitio Ruby , Quezon City cooked the meals in their village as early as three in the morning, sacrificing sleep as they excitedly prepared to meet and feed the wandering hungry of the city. Other communities which donated foods include Molave, Lupang Pangako and Tribu.

Caridad Uanang, leader of Sitio Pajo in her stage remarks cited her realization that, “ Pag kaunti; pagdugtong-dugtungin, marami na rin!”, referring to the many hands that pooled efforts to make the breakfast treat for the hungry happen.

Peter Rommel Platon , leader of the homeless was from the Timog – Kamuning Area was quick to point out in the organizational meetings for the activity that we who feed, often forget the fact that more than the food, the homeless are really hungry for friendships, relationship, people who by taking notice of them and what they need, affirm them and uphold their dignity.

After sharing the meal together, the hungry were treated to entertainment by volunteer artists who sang:

“ Huwag sumuko, kaya mo ‘yan. Huwag itigil ang laban.”

“ Kung sino – sino, kung saan – saan ka pa naghahanap. Nandito lang naman ako.”

In closing, Florentina Condez leader of Sitio Ruby said: “Nagpapasalamat kami sa inyo na nagpapaunlak sa aming paanyaya ng salu-salo. Sama-sama tayong magtulungan, mag-ibigan at magdasal.”

A grateful kid pinned flowers on the volunteer’s pants.

Printed on the emcee’s shirt was the message: “Helping others never goes out of style.”

Senator Grace Poe visited the event.

At 10, as the sun rose to mid-morning the crowd broke up, as those who roam the streets must once again be on their way to look for their next meal.
