GK Environment program aims to create "green" model communities through its various programs to protect the environment. Love and care for the environment are inculcated among community members through seminars while creating environment- friendly projects like solid waste management and partnership with environment advocacy groups and government agencies. "Save the poor, save the environment."
WHY WE DO IT
The poor are the most dependent on natural resources to meet their daily needs. With limited know how and hardly any option, they also contribute substantially to environmental degradation - through slash and burn farming, cutting of wood including mangroves for charcoal-making, disposal of wastewater and solid waste direct to water bodies, and the like. Unfortunately, they are also the most adversely affected and the least capable in coping with the consequences of this environmental degradation. To help the poor in a sustainable manner and to provide for their needs for the long term, we must help them save the environment. To truly save the environment, we must engage and mobilize the poor to make them active partners in its protection and rehabilitation.
Green Kalinga is the environment program of Gawad Kalinga that seeks to ensure the continued access of clean air and water and productive lands and seas for all GK communities. Anchored in the vision and mission of GK, Green Kalinga seeks to not only address the social consequences brought about by massive poverty, but also to empower the poor to become active partners in the fight to address rapid environmental degradation and climate change which threatens their lives and livelihood.
HOW WE DO IT
Green Kalinga is a demand-driven environment program implemented in the GK communities. Each GK community is individually assessed based on its natural features and the needs of the community and from here appropriate Green Kalinga components are implemented to address the needs of the community.
More than the utilization of alternative technology, much of the success of the Green Kalinga program depends on how the values and principles pertaining to the environment are imbibed and practiced by the GK residents, workers and volunteers. The technical and advocacy support provided by Green Kalinga and its partners to ensure continued access to cleaner air and water and productive soil becomes sustainable only when a shift of lifestyle is adopted by each community.
Volunteers from academic institutions and civil society groups ensure the implementation of Green Kalinga components by adopting specific GK communities and engaging them through teaching and empowerment.
Corporations and individuals are actively involved through the funding of enhancements for existing GK communities and ensuring that proper environmental planning is integrated for new GK communities in light of new research and changing norms.
Through its internal advocacy, Green Kalinga has begun integrating itself into all the other GK programs to ensure that they adhere to the values and principles of sound environmental management in their implementation.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
As environmental issues take center stage in the global arena, local action taking into account the country’s natural vulnerabilities has become urgent. In the onset of increasingly intense natural calamities in developing countries such as the Philippines, stakeholders are now looking at sounder environmental planning amidst natural hazards, varying degrees of exposure and the extreme vulnerability of the majority of the poor. Institutional partners are now reviewing existing GK communities and providing fresh funding to enhance them environmentally.
Templates for new GK communities have been developed to incorporate environmental principles. Volunteers are now going down to the different GK communities to support the implementation and management of the program.
You can help Green Kalinga by:
1. Teaching the community proper waste segregation methods.
2. Adopt a GK community and introduce green technologies such as rainwater catchers and solar powered facilities.
3. Help integrate environmental practices in GK villages.
4. Form a group and hold planting activities in a GK community.
5. Sponsor green technologies to be implemented in GK communities with the help of GK residents for sustainability.
