GK Mandaluyong CYD Olympics
[Date Created: August 13, 2013]

by Dennis Montealto

In the tradition of the SAGIP and SIGA Olympics of yesteryears, Gawad Kalinga Mandaluyong held the annual sporting event that it revived last year on a local scale. This May, the children and youth of GK Mandaluyong saw action in the same games that they competed for during the previous year: basketball, volleyball, badminton, chess, darts, cheerdance and the newly included football.

Close to three-hundred fifty participants not counting the chaperones, parents and guardians gathered to participate in and witness the competitions at the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) Activity Rehabilitation Center. Six GK sites sent their players to vie for the medals. Individual and group partners also graced the affair to deliver their share for distribution to the kids, whether they are snacks or food stuffs for the prizes of the street games. GK Child & Youth Development (CYD) volunteers and coordinators came in full force to administer the proceedings.

In the end, after the smoke has cleared, trophies were handed to the winners. For Cheerdance, 3rd place goes to GK Hilaga-Kapalaran; 2nd place is GK Concepcion and 1st place is from GK Welfareville, retaining its crown from last year's Olympics.

The final medal tallies showed a shift of supremacy. For Over-all Champion, GK Concepcion beat GK Welfareville, last year's winner, to take home the trophy. The latter has to settle second best. Third placer is GK Hilaga-Kapalaran.
