BOHOL (Brgy. Bayacabac, Maribojoc)

"After the earthquake, life in the tents was difficult. But we need to survive. Our community suffered but we continue to hope. Every time I eat sardines, it brings me memories of our experiences of the earthquake. I almost became hopeless but I was also reminded that it is not only my family experiencing this. GK went to 3 barangays here in Maribojoc, Bohol but only our barangay, Brgy Bayacabac, said YES to GK's offer to help. My father and mother helped build the homes. And after a year of hardship, we moved into our new homes. Our new house has no leaks and we are now safer, even in an earthquake. We are no longer hungry. Before we grow flowers but now we grow 7 vegetables. We have a goal to end our own poverty through bayanihan and working together." - Junalyn, GK Bayacabac, Maribojoc, Bohol

Our MAD Travel family brought guests-turned-families and spent their Christmas with our community in Maribojoc! Thank you, thank you! Maayong pasko sa inyong tanan!

CAPIZ (Brgy. Gabuc, Pontevedra)
Congrats to them another success story of caring and sharing! Done turn over ceremony for Doña Teofila GK Site at Bryg. Gabuc, Pontevedra, Capiz." - Ninz, Volunteer

Credits to Ms. Hannah Joy Daynolo for her original composition "Pasko ng Gawad Kalinga" and to Martin Dexter Yu as the guitarist.

- Herbert, GK Worker

Unilab Christmas Salo-Salo with GK families from NTC GK Village, San Rose GK Village and Tawi-tawi GK Village. It was truly a day full of fun and enjoyment. GK Kids from different communities showed their talent in song and dance number. Everyone enjoyed watching how GK kids performed. Unilab also gave 70 bags full of goodies to 70 GK families for their Noche Buena. By just looking at them, I felt their happiness and gratefulness for being given such gifts. It was such an invigorating feeling to see that kind of setting, looking at the joyous faces from the beneficiaries who don't know how to express their gratitude that they were given such opportunity to be part of this program.

The spirit of Christmas is the spirit of love, generosity and of goodness. It is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is the perfect time to celebrate the love of God and family and to create memories that will last forever. Jesus is God's perfect, indescribable gift. The amazing thing is that not only are we able to receive this gift, but we are able to share it with others on Christmas and every other day of the year. Thank you Unilab for your generosity and for journeying with us.

LANAO DEL NORTE (Brgy. Sta Elena, Iligan)
"It was a few days before Christmas, 4 years ago, when Typhoon Sendong (Washi) devastated Iligan and left thousands either dead, homeless, or fighting for survival. Grief filled the air. Christmas was never the same again.

A few months later, together with hundreds of volunteers, I got to visit the relocation site in Sta. Elena, which was then a huge piece of bare land. lt was my very first Bayani Challenge, and with our rain boots and gloves, we braved the mud to put one hollow block on top of the other. Today the Bayanihan sa Iligan Village is a thriving community of more than 1,600 families: the product of the solidarity of partners, volunteers, and the survivors themselves.

It is a few days before Christmas, but it is no longer grief that fills the air. It is the laughter of children as they run around the community that now shelters them from their fears. It is the morning chitchat of neighbors as they cook bananas over firewood, under the shade of the trees. It is the buzz of the pedicabs and motorcycles as they go around the cemented streets. It's hard to tell that these families are survivors of the biggest natural calamity that hit Mindanao in decades, because here they are today, stronger than ever before and working together to build #afuturefullofhope. Christmas lives." - Gia, GK Worker
