[Date Created: May 4, 2015]

Week 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
PROVINCE   Iloilo
Samar     Eastern Samar     Surigao del Norte

ILOILO (Concepcion, Ajuy, Lemery)

For Week 3 in Iloilo, the towns of Concepcion, Ajuy, and Lemery accepted the challenge of Barangay Walang Iwanan. Together, they want to #endpoverty not just for the barangays in their municipality but also for the entire province.

The week started with a bang when the Bayani Challenge opened in Concepcion.

Volunteers from different barangays in the town gathered to participate in the challenge.

Vice Gov. Boboy Tupas talks about volunteerism and encourages all to participate in the Bayani Challenge.

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead."

— Iloilo Vice Gov. Raul "Boboy" C. Tupas (quoting Nelson Mandela)

Everyone, including French volunteers who were there to accept the challenge as well, witnessed the symbolic turnover of the Bayani Challenge flag from the town of San Dionisio to Mayor Milliard Villanueva of Concepcion.

The municipality of Ajuy was also game to accept the challenge of Barangay Walang Iwanan. During the opening program on April 21, hundreds gathered in the Ajuy Municipal Hall for the opening program of the Bayani Challenge 2015.

Mayor Milliard of Concepcion turns over the Bayani Challenge flag to Mayor Juancho Alvarez of Ajuy, symbolizing Ajuy's acceptance of the challenge to #endpoverty.

The French volunteers were also there to join the fun, participating in Laro ng Lahi (Filipino games), which left everyone in stitches.

Aside from the fun and games, the volunteers also had the opportunity to spend quality time with the kids during the Paraisong Pambata (play therapy) and feeding sessions in Brgy. San Antonio and the island barangay of Nasidman.

Lemery is the 7th town in Iloilo to join Barangay Walang Iwanan accept the challenge to #endpoverty. During the opening, the different barangays of Lemery witnessed their Mayor Ligaya Apura accept the challenge (and the symbolic flag) from the municipality of Ajuy.

SAMAR (Daram)

In the island of Daram, Samar, the bayanihan spirit was also high. With a stunning view of the coastline, a football and frisbee clinic was held by the LGU and volunteers who came all the way from from Calbayog City. These are the future athletes of Daram!

Other activities included a medical mission in Brgy. Talisay, Kalinga nights, and a reproductive health awareness drive in Poblacion 1 and 3. After the GAWA forum on livelihood and values, there was also a bayanihan for Balangay, where the fishermen worked together to repaint of their Balangay boats. Waray Baya-ay ha Daram!

EASTERN SAMAR (Lawaan)

Eastern Samar also had its share of bayanihan as hundreds of volunteers gathered in Lawaan Central Elementary School. The people of Lawaan greeted the opening of the Bayani Challenge with big smiles and unparalleled energy. They showed everyone that it's really possible for an entire municipality to come together and commit to leave no one behind. As GK Volunteer Sarah Gabornes says, "Sinong hindi mai-encourage makipag#Bayanihan kung ang kaagapay mo ay ganyang kadaming tao?"

We are also glad that we have found a group of youth that are more than willing to give love and happiness to our chikitings in Brgy. Maslog, Lawaan, Eastern Samar. Now that we have a plan, we move next. And PARAISONG PAMBATA is just the beginning of their GK journey. Thank you Maslog Youth Organization, headed by Mr. Artemio Chicano Jr, for the all-out support.

Paraisong Pambata: "Without a doubt, a child's smile wears off all the tiredness and frustrations you just faced during the day...
Then how much more the smiles of 40 kids? That would be beyond comparison. It would be enough to inspire you to do the mission your whole lifetime." — Sarah Gabornes, GK Volunteer

SURIGAO DEL NORTE (Siargao Island)

In Surigao del Norte, volunteers from all over also headed to Siargao Island not just to experience the sun, sand, and sea but to beat the summer heat with fun and bayanihan. Everybody had a role to play, from youth volunteers to members of the police force to employees of LBC.

The highlight activity was the house build, which was held in GK Del Carmen, Brgy. Lobogon, Del Carmen, Siargao. Everyone was game to build houses and help #endpoverty in their own way.

The Bayani Challenge in Siargao was also extra fun for the young and young at heart, who got to experience a youth camp that taught them leadership, teamwork, and nation-building.

After all that hard work, the volunteers were rewarded with a sumptuous Boodle Lunch. The Bayani Challenge closed with a Del Carmen Mangrove Eco-Park MOA signing.
