One of GK CYD’s ardent supporters is Meralco, the Philippine’s electric distribution company. Taking on the role of Big Brother to the country's underprivileged youth, Meralco has built Sibol schools as a priority project in the company's social responsibility program.
“The Sibol School is Meralco’s way of nurturing the dreams of children and families and building community through education,” said Christopher Yap, head of Meralco’s corporate social responsibility office.
In 2008 alone, Meralco constructed seven school buildings to facilitate better learning of preschool children in GK communities. Supporting GK’s child development program promoting community-based education is their way of giving back to the community and bringing the light of knowledge to young minds so that their future will be bright.
“The gift of education surpasses other material gifts that we can give to a child. It is with education that they will learn good values and manners and become productive citizens in the future,” shared Meralco’s chief executive officer Manolo Lopez.
His older brother Oscar Lopez is also a staunch supporter of GK CYD, committing to build one Sibol school every year on his birthday. Many workers and GK workers are praying that he lives a long life!
